The efficiency of a systems depends on the thermodynamic cycle process of the machine.

Usually the exhaust gas from combustion machines contain a significant amount of thermal and kinetic energy. The recovery of thermal energy and feeding it back into the combustion process increases the total efficiency and reduces the fuel consumption. For this process recuperators are used which extract a part of energy that is contained in the exhaust gas and feed it back into machine process right before the combustion. Like this less fuel is need to reach the needed combustion temperature. It is possible to feed the energy back counter-flow, cross-flow and with the flow. Applications of this technology are micro turbine based range increasement systems or combined heat and power units (BHKWs). Future plans include jet engines.
